What is Cedarwood?

Cone-shaped and growing up to 100 feet tall with familiar deep, dark green foliage, the cedar tree has been a timeless part of human history. A true symbol of prosperity and strength, this marvelous evergreen can stand firmly rooted for an outstanding 1,000 years! The first cedar trees cultivated were Lebanon Cedar, though due to overharvesting there has been an unfortunate and seemingly irreversible shortage in its population. This is why you’ll find that most cedar oils are either Atlas Cedar, native to Morocco and Algeria, or Juniper (Red) Cedar, found across the eastern parts of North America.

Cedar has long been a prized tree across a span of cultures and beliefs for numerous reasons. In Tibetan temples, cedar oil has been—and still is—burned to inspire a spiritual feeling of stability and safety, encouraging the reflection of eternal values. The ancient Egyptians used cedar oil for embalming during the mummification process, as well as a pleasantly fragrant ingredient in perfumes and cosmetics. A traditional Cherokee belief is that cedar trees contain their ancestral spirits; meditating on these trees would keep the memories of the dearly departed alive, in addition to gaining the cedar tree’s spiritual protection.

Cedarwood Essential Oil

Steam distilled from the wood and sawdust of the Cedrus atlantica tree, cedarwood oil emits a distinctly woody and sweet scent. It is a favorite for helping to ease stress and tension, soothing the entire being. Its balsamic aroma, reflective of the ancient and respected tree from which it was derived, can be both grounding and strengthening, as it works to banish negative energy and offer spiritual cleansing. When combined with a carrier oil and applied topically, cedarwood oil has been revered for promoting skin health and lustrous hair.

Blending essential oils opens up a world of wellness possibilities! Other oils that complement cedarwood’s camphorous fragrance include: bergamot, chamomile, clary sage, cypress, jasmine, lavender, neroli, rosemary, sandalwood, and ylang ylang oils.

PipingRock's pure Cedarwood Oil is available in 1/2 oz., 2 oz. & 16 oz. bottles.
